Mortar Crown

This concrete-like surface is featured at the top of the chimney. It protects against water buildup in the flue and the chimney chase.

Flue

This vertical opening through the chimney extends all the way from the smoke chamber to the very top of the chimney. The flue is needed for the fireplace to vent properly and efficiently.

Firebox

Fuel is combusted in this region of the masonry fireplace.

Hearth

The hearth is the aforementioned fireproof area of the fireplace. It is located in the front of the unit, and is generally made with stone, brick or tile.

Ash Dump

An ash dump sounds like an area where ashes would be dumped, right? Well, that is a good guess and you would be correct! Ashes are collected here and can be removed via the fireplace door.

Foundation

This area is often referred to as the footing of a masonry fireplace. Building codes may specify a width with proper reinforcement or certain thickness.

Damper

The damper is a mechanical device that can open and regulate the draft and airflow to the firebox. This is also responsible for preventing heat from escaping through the chimney.

Lintel

This non-combustible part spans the very top of the fireplace opening.

Smoke Shelf

Located directly behind the throat of the fireplace, this surface is here to prevent down drafts.
