There are two different types of fireplace inserts, including fireboxes and logs. Below we will guide you step-by-step if you wish to install an electric fireplace insert yourself.
Clearance Requirements
These are the minimum clearances for various parts of your new electric insert:
- 3/8″ are needed from the firebox top to a combustible or non-combustible material.
- 2″ from insert frame top to the above mantel board.
- 1″ from back and sides of the insert to the surrounding walls.
- There is no minimum clearance to the floor.
Fireplace Insert Installation Steps
Before starting any DIY installation projects, make sure your insert functions correctly. Test it by plugging it in, playing with the heat and lights. If it works, it’s time to move to step one of the process.
Step 1. Put Cover Plate On Your Chimney
- Put a cover plate on your chimney to prevent water from coming in before installation.
- If your chimney doesn’t feature a rain cap, the cover plate will prevent water from entering.
Step 2. Close And Seal The Damper
- Close and seal the damper of your masonry fireplace to prevent any drafts or heat loss.
Step 3. Install Power Outlet
- Every insert will plug into a standard household power outlet.
- Install an outlet inside your fireplace if you wish to keep the area free of cords.
- It is recommended to hire a licensed electrician for this task.
Step 4. Place Firebox Into Your Fireplace
- Slide the firebox inside the fireplace opening.
- Center and level the firebox.
- Adjust the leveling screws, if necessary.
- Some inserts may have tie-down brackets to attach to the fireplace floor and back of the insert.
- Attach on both sides to ensure your insert will not tip.
Step 5. Attach Trim Or Frame
- Attach the trim or frame to cover the gaps between the insert and fireplace walls.
- Some inserts will come with metal trim, while others may feature glass frames.
