It is true that gas fireplaces are much safer than their wood-burning counterparts, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that people should ignore some basic safety precautions.
Gas Fireplace Safety Tips
Of course, any gas appliance can be dangerous, yet a gas fireplace is no different from any other gas appliance that may be found inside a home. These appliances, though, have become much safer over the past few decades. Safety precautions now come built into the units in order to protect against any at-home hazards. Many gas fireplaces will come equipped with an oxygen depletion sensor, designed to shut the unit off entirely when a low amount of oxygen level is reached.
Follow these safety tips when using your gas fireplace:
1. Pay Attention To Clearance Zones
Sure, it is possible to place electronics and/or decor around the fireplace, but no matter what there will always be a specified area surrounding the unit where it is unsafe to place items. Never put any wood, books or drapes too close to the firebox.
2. Check The Safety Screen Barrier
Gas fireplaces will feature a glass panel which separates the firebox from the rest of the room. This makes the firebox safer and more efficient, at the same time. The only downside is this glass can become extremely hot to the touch. Nowadays, a safety mesh screen is required as part of the unit. Double check to make sure this screen has been installed properly.
3. Schedule Yearly Maintenance
Even though modern gas units require far less maintenance than in the past, it’s still a good idea to schedule an annual inspection of the unit. The best time to schedule this appointment is before the cooler season hits and you wish to use the fireplace more often.
4. Get A Double Glass Heat Barrier
If you want more safety and efficiency, then adding a double glass heat barrier is the way to go. Two panes of glass will be positioned on the outer and inner panel, with a ventilation layer in between.
5. Keep Children Safe
The best way to keep your children safe at all times is to warn them of the danger associated with fireplaces. Tell them to stay away from the unit whenever it is turned on.
